Mediterranean and dry continental climates may well be the main inspiration for dry gardens. However, we can easily choose from the northern climate’s flora, as often due to the lack of accessible water they use similar survival strategies as their southern counterparts. Alternatively, the southern hemisphere’s flora often provides a colourful choice and leads to a very different character.
These habitats typically require less maintenance and irrigation – if any. The soil is often shallow and rocky. Pebbles, gravel, bark or other mulches are recommended, depending on the design.
