Lentoasemanpuisto

Project description:

The proposal, appreciating the unique history and importance of Helsinki-Malmin lentoasema for the people of Helsinki, seeks to take forward the important characteristics of its heritage, work with natural processes and the wild diversity of the area – but offer a place where nature and people would collaboratively shape new narratives, providing a stage for an organic evolution of the space.

Small scale but overaching interventions are aimed to respond the challenges of cultural heritage and natural, ecological values of the area.

The approach is to re-tell the traditional design process – instead of providing a built base for nature to fit around, the proposal is to provide a natural base for the built environment to organically develop with. The story of a place can only be shaped by natural processes and the people using it, building on its past and future layers. Picking these layers we find a rich mosaic of built and natural.

The proposal got purchased on the international competition.
