Lake Peipsi, Estonia

Project description:

This landscape planning study for the northern shore of Lake Peipsi, Estonia builds on the diverse local character and texture of the landscape. Carrying out a landscape character assessment and capacity studies allowed the design to enhance the landscape, protect sensitive areas and understand the fragile balance in a working landscape.

Planning for tourism focuses on the understanding of the symbiosis between local people and the land, introducing visitors to the everyday life of the place and exploration of opportunities for various users. This is achieved by highlighting the landscape character through a series of small interventions, as directing the footpath, designinig views, highlighting habitats whilst appreciating their capacity, introducing sculptural elements from local materials and subtle wayfinding methods. The character of the land is enhanced and diversified by large scale long term actions, such as introducing sustainable forestry methods, identifying especially vulnerable areas and promoting protection.
