The masterplan for Miskolc Steel Works aims to bring back the lost identity of the site, revitalise the factory and rediscover it within the city fabric. Many derelict industrial sites along the River Sajo now need revitalisation and could act as a catalyst for future evolution.
The Miskolc Steel Works revitalization is imagined through community initiative that is facilitated by a phased bioremediation that allows local people and visitors to take gradual ownership of the site. The factory always played a hugely important – not only economic but cultural and social – role in the city, and the communal memory and personal and social narratives of the site show the importance of its heritage. Creating a legacy, bringing it back to the circulation is essential for the future of the city.
Phytoremediation is a tool for renewing the site, building and reinforcing the city’s existing green infrastructure and remediate the site from pollutants, creating a safe and resilient place for the community to take over. New research informed the planting strategy and spatial arrangement and enables the creation of a flexible framework for multiple uses.
